A Cardiff man has appeared in court charged with terrorism offences following an operation by officers from Counter Terrorism Policing Wales. Police said while the charge will be concerning to people in Cardiff and beyond, there was "no direct identified threat" to communities in South Wales.

Sajid Idris appeared at Westminster Magistrates Court today charged with offences of disseminating a terrorist publication, intended or reckless to encouragement of an act of terrorism, and supporting a proscribed organisation namely Al-Muhajiroun.

The 44-year-old was remanded into custody ahead of a further hearing at the Central Criminal Court, better known as the Old Bailey, on August 21. Stay in the know by making sure you’re receiving our daily newsletter

Speaking after the hearing South Wales Police Assistant Chief Constable Trudi Meyrick said: "We understand how concerning these charges will be to the Cardiff communities and our wider communities of South Wales and want to reassure them that we are working closely with Counter Terrorism Police to keep the public safe.

"Whilst there was no direct identified threat to our communities, I encourage the public to remain vigilant and report anything of concern to police in confidence."
