Andy Burnham received loud cheers as he came out to address crowds outside Number 10 North.

The new Prime Minister and Labour leader has spent his first day working from the government's new northern headquarters, which officially opened in Manchester city centre today (Friday, July 24).

It it currently based in Heron House, which overlooks Albert Square and is also home to GCHQ's Manchester and north west hub, while a permanent home is developed.

The former Greater Manchester Mayor and now Makerfield MP arrived in his official security convoy this morning but was driven straight into the bowels of the building as scores of press and members of the public waited outside.

Inside, he told staff in an emotional address that it 'might be the best day of my life' as he declared it marked the start of a 'different way of running Britain.'

As the day drew on, large crowds gathered outside the building hoping to catch a glimpse of their new Prime Minister.

And shortly before 7pm, Mr Burnham walked out of the front door to huge cheers.

He cupped his hands and shouted 'thank you everybody, thank you so much' before declaring 'I love you Manchester.'

He waved and shouted 'I've got to go' as members of the press attempted to shout questions at him as he made his way back inside.

Mr Burnham is expected to work from the hub at least once a week during his premiership with other members of his cabinet expected to work there on a 'regular basis.'
