Second Lady Usha Vance is opening up for the first time about what life in the Vice President’s residence is like now that her fourth child has arrived. Vice President Vance and the second lady welcomed baby No. 4 on July 19, announcing in an Instagram post that Alec Neel Vance had arrived safely. Baby Alec joins three siblings: Ewan, Vivek, and Mirabel.

In her first interview since giving birth, Vance told Fox News that her experience of being a mom of four has been “really lovely so far.”

“One of the things that has just been beautiful to see is how excited my older kids are about their new brother,” she said. “They’re always fighting over holding him. When we do diaper changes or clothes changes, one of them is always there helping. They’re willing to burp him, they want to grab things for him, they want to entertain him.” 

Vance also said she’s been making an effort to do things individually with each of her older kids and the baby, so no one feels left out. “They feel like they’re getting their own personal time with both of us,” she said. “And we’re trying to do that all the time. Now, I’m sure there are going to be hiccups here and there, but for right now, they seem to be really thriving.”

Like most families at this time of year, Vance also shared that she and her kids are deep in preparations for back-to-school season. In addition to gathering school supplies and trying to enjoy as much time playing outside as possible, she said they’re practicing waking up earlier. “Over the month of August,” Vance explained, “we slowly get everything prepared so it doesn’t come as too much of a shock when they have to wake up at 6:30 again every morning.”

The second lady also spoke candidly about the nervousness she felt when she and the Vice President decided they would be adding a fourth child to the family. “I would say I had all sorts of angst about this. My family felt so complete. My kids were growing into a new phase,” she shared.

Now that Alec has arrived, however, her worries have dissipated. “I’m really glad that we took this plunge,” Vance said. “I’m really glad that we decided to move into the unknown and do something that felt like a little bit of a risk to a settled and happy family dynamic because it’s only become happier.”
