WASHINGTON, September 23. /TASS/. The administration of Donald Trump undermined allies’ trust in the United States during negotiations on a deal concerning Greenland, senior Democratic member of the US Senate Foreign Relations Committee Jeanne Shaheen (New Hampshire) stated.

"After months of threatening our NATO Ally Denmark and disregarding the will of the Greenlandic people, President Trump has reached a 'deal' that essentially returns the US-Greenland defense relationship to where it was before. But President Trump’s threats and bullying rhetoric on this issue have come at a cost: the United States is now viewed with skepticism and increased distrust by some of our closest allies," Shaheen said in a statement on X.

According to her, "that has damaged America’s trade relationships and undermined the NATO Alliance." As Shaheen noted, the United States "has real work to do to rebuild trust with Denmark, Greenland and our allies across Europe."

Earlier, Trump said that the US and Denmark had reached an agreement on Washington taking control of Greenland’s security. He said that the US would immediately begin to increase its military presence on the Arctic island. The agreement was signed on the sidelines of the 81st session of the UN General Assembly in New York by US President Donald Trump, as well as the Prime Ministers of Denmark and Greenland, Mette Frederiksen and Jens·Frederik Nielsen.
