STAMFORD — Traffic on Interstate 95 was briefly halted Friday when police stopped a Stamford-bound funeral procession because several participants were hanging out of car windows, officials said. 

Law enforcement began receiving multiple 911 calls around 12:50 p.m. from motorists on the highway reporting individuals were hanging out of vehicles in a funeral procession, according to Connecticut State Police. 

Police said troopers responded to the southbound lanes and performed a traffic stop of the lead vehicle in the procession, which caused the entire motorcade to stop and effectively shut down the interstate. 

Police said the procession was permitted to proceed off the interstate to a cemetery in Stamford shortly after the traffic stop. No injuries were reported. 

It was not immediately clear if any charges are pending in connection with the procession. Police said the incident is under investigation.
