Obviously, I think this domain name acquisition was smart.
In addition to eliminating friction, the company was able to prevent a competitor or another entity with that branding from using or operating on the domain name. This could have caused even more friction for the startup.
Some startup founders view the acquisition of a domain name as a sunk cost without fully considering all of its benefits. In the shorter term, the purchase may seem expensive, especially for a startup. Over the longer term, a strategic domain name can support continued customer acquisition, strengthen brand credibility and trust, and make the company easier to find and remember.
Unlike many marketing and advertising expenses that stop producing results when the spending stops, a domain name remains a permanent business asset that continues to deliver value at a very low annual cost.
