I've visited 43 British seaside towns. I'm from the south coast of Devon and my job means I get to to visit a range of resorts up and down the UK. Some seaside towns have sandy beaches, others have traditional piers and promenades, but each is unique in its own special way.
From the rugged headlands of the Jurassic Coast and dramatic coastlines of north Wales to the Illuminations in Blackpool and the sweeping sands of Bournemouth, every seaside town offers something slightly different. I was recently asked to name my favourite seaside town of all those that I've visited.
Rather than plucking a name from thin air, I set out certain criteria for my selection: beach and seafront, peace and quiet, scenery and character, food and drink, and tourist attractions.
Most of the resorts that I've visited, which include towns and cities, score highly in a number of these categories. For example, Weymouth is famed for its sweeping beach and St Ives is often considered the most scenic. Blackpool was great for attractions and Padstow offers the best fish and chips. However, there was one that stands out from the rest.
Lyme Regis, known as the "Pearl of Dorset", is always the town that I recommend people to visit. It has everything - a stunning seafront, charming and relaxed atmosphere, quirky shops, good pubs and places to eat, and friendly locals.
Located on the Jurassic Coast, Lyme Regis was named the third best seaside resort in the UK last year. Unlike other resorts across the popular South West region, Lyme Regis, which has a population of around 4,000, boasts a quiet atmosphere and is perfect for a weekend away all-year round.
The town's main shopping strip, which stretches from Silver Street down to Broad Street, is brimming with shops and cafes. The steep hill, which is lined with quirky independent shops and eateries, runs down to the town's beautiful seafront.
It's here where the true beauty of the town is on display. As you stand on Marine Parade, which leads onto the beach, you are greeted with stunning panoramic views out to sea and the Jurassic Coast. For me, it's the most beautiful stretch of coastline that I've seen in the UK.
Not only are the views spectacular, but Lyme Regis also has four beaches which offer something slightly different to visitors. Unlike other seaside towns, which typically have one stretch of beach, Lyme Regis has four separate beaches. Tenby in south Wales is another seaside town with four separate beaches.
The Town Beach, located near the harbour, is the ideal spot for swimming and building sandcastles, while Church Cliff Beach is known for its rockpools. Meanwhile, East Cliff Beach is famed for its quiet atmosphere and Monmouth Beach for its fossils.
In terms of places to eat and drink, there are plenty in Lyme Regis. Tom's Lyme Regis, located on Marine Parade, offers award-winning seafood, while Eat at Millside serves local produce, and the historic Bell Cliff Restaurant, a 16th-century building, sells modern British cuisine.
There are also a number of cafes and ice cream parlours, including the Town Mill Bakery and Baboo Gelato. During my visit, I sat and ate at the Rock Point Inn which boasts stunning views out to sea.
At the "artisan quarter", located at Combe Street and the Town Mill complex, visitors can find a host of gift shops and galleries. There are also a range of independent shops in the town centre, offering arts, crafts, jewellery and local products.
Although it might not have famed attractions such as Blackpool Pleasure Beach or the white cliffs of the Seven Sisters, there is plenty to keep you busy in Lyme Regis. The Marine Aquarium and the independently-operated Dinosaurland Fossil Museum are both popular while the town also welcomes a Jazz and Blues Festival during the summer.
Above all - the stunning beaches, great places to eat, charming vibe, independent shops and attractions - Lyme Regis is comfortably among the friendliest places that I've visited. Everyone that I spoke with was friendly and greeted me with a smile. I can't wait to go back.
Where is the best pier in the UK?But it's Llandudno that has the best pier in the UK in my view. Named Pier of the Year in 2025, it is a destination in itself, stretching 700 metres out into the Irish Sea, making it Wales's longest pier, and the fifth longest in the UK. It has shops, stalls, cafes and arcades, all accompanied by the sound of the sea and the rejuvenating sea air.
Llandudno's famous promenade is also worth walking along and the Great Orme rises up from beside the town. And soon you may be able to explore an abandoned "sunken palace" that's been hidden and forgotten under the town for decades.
