NORWALK — The Smallcakes Cupcakery and Creamery will open its first store in Connecticut this April in The Waypointe Development on Merwin Street, according to the property owner.

“It will be a great spot to grab a treat in the neighborhood,” said Dan DeStefano, senior vice president of Beachwold Residential, which owns Waypointe. The chain bakery will be next door to the Fresh Monkee, another chain that has its roots in the state and sells protein shakes.

DeStefano added that Smallcakes has a “strong following" at their Scarsdale, New York location and has been featured on the Food Network’s Cupcake Wars television show.

Smallcakes joins Amma South Indian Cuisine as the newest tenants in the mixed-use development at 515 West Ave. in Norwalk.

The bakery and creamery is known for its cupcakes with 12 rotating flavors and monthly specialty flavors, as well as its cookies, small-batch ice cream and custom order cakes and cupcakes, DeStefano said.

The chain has some 180 stores in the U.S., including New York with a concentration in the South. Other locations include the Midwest and Western states, including Arizona, California, Colorado, Nevada and New Mexico. There is a Smallcakes franchise in the United Arab Emirates. 

City officials said they are pleased to see Smallcakes come to The Waypointe and said new eateries coming to Norwalk is part of a trend.

“Smallcakes brings a recognizable national dessert brand that adds family-friendly energy and foot traffic, which bodes well for the other family-oriented restaurants in The Waypointe,” said Jenn McMurrer, communications director for the city of Norwalk.

“It really helps to have those storefronts filled and with really fun diverse businesses too, which is great so there's something for everyone,” she added.

McMurrer said Norwalk is seeing “a strong mix of independent restaurateurs, regional favorites and national concepts choosing to invest here.” 

The wide variety of eateries in the city, she added, “strengthens our identity” as a dining destination in Fairfield County, as well as supporting the “economic vitality of the neighborhoods,” such as South Norwalk, Wall Street and West Norwalk areas.
