Inside the North Texas task force arresting murder suspects

Dallas police say no fugitive is out of reach as the North Texas Fugitive Task Force continues its efforts to track down some of the region’s most dangerous suspects.
“We will continue to go after the worst of the worst every single day in the city of Dallas,” Dallas Police Chief Daniel Comeaux said.
Comeaux said the operation has led to more than 1,000 felony warrant arrests, including 35 during the first two weeks of July. The task force specializes in locating people wanted for some of the most serious crimes, including murder.
NBC 5 was given exclusive access to ride along with the U.S. Marshals North Texas Fugitive Task Force Alpha Team as members worked to arrest two Dallas murder suspects during an early morning operation.
“For someone to do something that violent, I mean, you have a reckless disregard for life,” Sgt. Sheldon Smith with the North Texas Fugitive Task Force said.
Just after 4:30 a.m. on a Friday, the team set out to arrest Jamal Greene, who was wanted on a capital murder charge in connection with a Memorial Day weekend shooting at an Airbnb in West Dallas. Three people were killed and another person was injured.
As officers briefed just blocks from a home in Forney where investigators believed Greene was staying, another team member watching the house spotted a vehicle leaving the garage, prompting officers to adjust their plan.
“So we had movement at the house, and before we actually were going to do this, the plan. So, you know, as I said before, it’s fluid,” Smith said.
Greene was taken into custody without incident. Detectives informed him he was under arrest for murder and explained the next steps in the process.
Greene’s last words to his mother highlighted the emotional aspect for families who are often unaware of their loved one’s alleged crimes.
“Mama I love you. You know I didn’t do nothing, Mama, its okay,” Greene said.
Dallas Police’s homicide unit also obtained a search warrant for the home as part of the investigation. Before detectives entered, the department’s UAS Squad flew a drone inside to ensure the home was safe. Detectives later recovered a handgun.
“Hopefully it’ll bring closure to the case. Of course, he has to go through the judicial process. Our little piece of the pie in that is to get him into custody, get him there safely,” Smith said.
As the morning continued, the task force shifted its attention to a second arrest.
U.S. Marshals, state police and Dallas police officers reviewed their plan before taking a 16-year-old into custody in Pleasant Grove. Authorities said the teen was also wanted in a Dallas murder investigation.
“We definitely want to be overly careful with a kid this age, you know, he’s already made a bad decision,” Smith said.
The team found the 16-year-old in a bedroom, placed him in handcuffs and escorted him to a patrol vehicle.
Authorities said the two arrests are part of the hundreds the North Texas Fugitive Task Force expects to make this year as it works to take violent offenders off the streets and into the judicial system.
