designboom in a conversation with ioana teleanu about how AI is fundamentally changing the contemporary design landscape.

For the third feature of Navigators of Design, a 10-part interview series produced with Most Studios, designboom connects with Ioana Teleanu, an expert designer, strategist, and founder of AI-R studio. Stepping into the digital frontier, Ioana explores how artificial intelligence fundamentally changes the human experience. Approaching AI not as software to implement but as a living, unpredictable creative material, designers can resist mechanical homogenization and preserve the irreplaceable value of human intent.
‘This is the first technology that changes the nature of the work itself. And when something changes the nature of the work, it changes the nature of the worker. Once I started thinking of it as material rather than just technology, everything clicked, because material is something you shape, you negotiate with, you learn the grain of’, opens Ioana Teleanu in our interview series with Most Studios.

After her extensive work within major enterprise ecosystems like UiPath and Miro, AI-R studio was born from observing shifting patterns across the contemporary design landscape. Believing that art leads the way in how society relates to and envisions technology, Ioana uses it to challenge rigid tech narratives. With traditional industry labels fading, she focuses on human needs and non-deterministic system behaviors to map out a new architecture of trust, redefining what it means to be a creator today.
‘Designers working with AI often depart from traditional UX deliverables,’ Ioana notes. ‘They define behavior spaces, write intent taxonomies, establish guardrails for probabilistic systems, and define protocols, none of that fits on a LinkedIn title at the moment.’

Ioana’s critical approach to AI is manifested in her work on UiPath’s Clipboard AI, which earned recognition as one of TIME’s Best Inventions of 2023. Rather than abandoning the deeply embedded gesture of copying and pasting, the design carefully extends it. The product interprets the semantic meaning of data across unrelated systems, instead of simply transferring raw pixels.
‘Context, language, and logic are the components, but what you’re really designing is the translation between human intent and machine behavior. In the pixel era, materials were static: a button is a button, a layout is a layout, the same screen for every user. In the AI era, the material is probabilistic: it shifts, it adapts, it hallucinates. We operate with non-deterministic outcomes. You’re not designing a fixed artifact, you’re designing a behavior space, the protocol or framework under which AI acts,’ the designer explains.

When systems optimize for statistical averages, they produce clean, competent, yet completely generic results, what the founder of AI-R studio defines as ‘mediocrity in a nice outfit’. True brand differentiation comes from the things AI structurally cannot generate, such as an authentic editorial voice, a distinct cultural perspective, and the inclination to take aesthetic risks that prioritize character over accommodation.
‘When I look at AI-generated design, what’s always missing is tension: no attitude, no quirks, no risk. Every component is correctly assembled, but nothing feels like it belongs to a specific brand, a specific culture, a specific set of values. Design without opinion is purely decoration,’ adds Ioana.

brand differentiation defined by aesthetic risks and cultural perspectives
After twenty years of an industry obsession with frictionless experiences that unintentionally optimized people into thoughtless, algorithmic submission, Ioana Teleanu actively advocates for an intentional friction to safeguard human agency within these automated ecosystems.
‘I am a huge proponent of intentional friction, and I’d go further: I think it’s one of the defining design patterns of the AI era,’ says the creator. ‘I built it into my own project, aidesign-os.com. The site is intentionally designed to be just a little difficult to consume, to encourage people to stay present and pay attention to what they’re reading instead of skimming on autopilot. I am very preoccupied with the concept of cognitive capitulation, this psychological phenomenon where people outsource their judgment entirely to AI, passively accepting algorithmic outputs without critical evaluation. And I think designers have an opportunity and a responsibility to tackle this problem space.’

This systemic shift fundamentally reconfigures what design leaders must look for when hiring creative teams. With layout execution readily automated, forward thinking organizations are bypassing polished portfolios to evaluate an appetite for complexity, rapid experimentation, and conceptual discernment. ‘Producing more is easy now. Producing the right thing, for the right reason, in the clearest possible way, still takes thought,’ Teleanu states.
Navigating technological fatigue requires a return to collective vulnerability and a fierce protection of analog spaces. ‘Staying human-centered starts with staying human ourselves. We can’t design with care for users while running ourselves into the ground trying to keep up with every release. Human-centered was never about the technology being human. It’s about the intent behind it being human. The more automated the world becomes, the more valuable the people who keep asking ‘should we?’ instead of just ‘can we?’ That question is ours to protect,’ Ioana Teleanu concludes.

‘Producing the right thing, for the right reason, in the clearest possible way, still takes thought,’ Ioana Teleanu
