Apple’s new iPhone Duo reportedly comes with a new Shift Left Edge setting that lets users add a fake bezel to its outer display. The toggle is built for one job: helping the first folding iPhone play nicer with cases.

The setting lives inside iPhone Duo’s display options. Turn it on, and content will shift away from the left edge of the screen. That way, a case that extends over the display won’t cover anything important.

How the Shift Left Edge setting works

Blogger Nicolas Lellouche stumbled across the setting while going hands-on with iPhone Duo ahead of its release. He shared a short video on X showing the toggle in the iPhone’s display settings menu.

Flip the switch, and the black border on the left edge of the outer display will almost double in width. It’s a really simple trick.

Apple pushes your icons and text a bit away from the fold, giving case makers extra room to work with.

Apple’s own description for this toggle mentions cases that partially cover the left edge of the display. That’s a specific problem to solve, and hints at how tight the tolerances are on Apple’s folding design.

Why case compatibility matters for the iPhone Duo

Apple is selling two official iPhone Duo cases — the iPhone Duo Case (shown above) and the iPhone Duo Folio with Kickstand. Neither seems to overlap the device’s outer screen enough to need the extra bezel, at least based on early impressions.

And that raises an obvious question. If Apple’s own cases don’t need the feature, who is it for? The likely answer is third-party accessory makers. Rugged cases, battery cases and wallet cases often wrap around a phone’s edges.

A folding phone with an outer screen is definitely a tricky shape to protect. And manufacturers may need every millimeter of room they can get. We will have to wait until October 23 — which is when the iPhone Duo reaches store shelves — to know the full picture.

For now, the iPhone Duo’s Shift Left Edge setting is a small but telling detail. It shows Apple thinking ahead about how a brand-new iPhone shape will survive daily life. That includes pockets, bags and, yes, cases.
