Apple’s Edge Light feature may soon make the jump from Mac to iPhone. Code in the iOS 27 release candidate suggests the glowing screen-border effect could be coming to the iPhone Duo. It could eventually make its way to other iPhone models, too.

The discovery comes from an analysis of Apple’s latest software beta. The code points to the Mac feature being adapted for iPhone, creating a soft ring of light around the edge of the display. The catch is that it’s still an early build, and some key settings aren’t finished yet.

After debuting in macOS 26.2 Tahoe last autumn, Edge Light turns a MacBook’s display into a built-in ring light for video calls. It puts a bright glow around the edges of the display, illuminating your face when the room is too dark for good camera lighting.

The feature uses the Neural Engine to adjust the light based on your face’s position and framing, while also letting you change the brightness and color temperature. For more recent Macs, it can even switch on by itself when the room gets dim. When you move your cursor, it fades out so your view of the screen isn’t blocked.

Evidence that it’s coming to iPhone Duo comes from the developer who goes by pdfu, who’s spent the last few weeks exploring Apple’s software update code for unreleased features. According to their analysis, iOS 27 is getting the Edge Light feature behind a device subtype. That points specifically to the iPhone Duo.

The color temperature slider is reportedly still a work in progress — a clear sign that the feature won’t be out soon.

What’s still unclear about Edge Light on iPhone

While iPhone Edge Light is part of the iOS 27 Release Candidate, it’s possible the feature won’t actually ship when the iPhone Duo comes out on October 23. Apple might silently pull it before then.

Moreover, it’s also unclear if the feature will be locked to the foldable. That said, pdfu was able to test it in the simulator for a standard iPhone, so it might eventually reach other iPhone models.

Since this is based on unreleased code, treat it as a strong signal, not a done deal. That said, pdfu has had a solid track record. Their Apple code findings have usually turned out to be accurate. Still, anything found in a release candidate build could change before launch.

If Edge Light really lands on the iPhone Duo, that would make Apple’s foldable feel like the company’s new go-to handset for video calls. And it won’t be just because of the giant inner screen.
