While “mommy wine culture” and jokes about parents needing a drink remain pervasive in our society, there are some who choose to parent sober because of their kids — rather than drinking because of them.
Among them is Corey Warren, a sober dad and host of the The Sober Boyz Podcast. Warren posts often about sobriety on TikTok, and recently uploaded a clip that contains a controversial question for parents who drink. “If you drink alcohol and you’re a parent, I have a simple question for you,” says Warren in the clip. “If your kid calls you at midnight and needs you, no warning, no planning, could you jump in the car and go? Could you think clearly? Can you be fully there?”
The short clip has received more than a million views, with lots of commenters weighing in with varying answers to Warren’s question. “First off,” joked one, “a 2 year old has no business calling me at midnight.” Another commented, “My kids come before anyone on this planet. But if you think I’m skipping a glass of wine to be on alert 24/7 you can think again.”
Others agreed with Warren. “I haven’t drank since 2023 before we started trying to have a baby,” one commenter said. “I don’t understand how people get drunk and risk not hearing their kid in the night.” Another chimed in, “This is one thing that helped me get sober as a parent.”
It’s an argument that left Warren’s comment section divided, with many commenting that there’s a difference between having a drink or two and getting so drunk you’re unable to help your kid if they’re in trouble. Still, sometimes moving from a drink or two to being drunk happens faster than we think, which is Warren’s whole point.
“See, there’s one thing that I love about sobriety and it’s simple,” Warren says at the end of his TikTok. “Nobody that I love ever has to wonder what version of me is answering that phone.”
