Some bands slow down after a few decades. The Real McKenzies have never seemed interested in that idea. Whether they’re crossing continents, packing venues with singalongs, or recording another round of Celtic punk anthems, they’ve built a career on momentum rather than nostalgia.

With their new album, On Yer Bike, just out on May 29, I spoke with drummer Mario Nieva about the creative process behind the record, the realities of life on tour, finding balance away from the stage, and what continues to drive a band that’s still moving full speed ahead.

Tell us about your latest project.

On Yer Bike is our  upcoming full length album. It is full of history, humour, animals, and methods of transportation…. AND cannibals. We will be touring behind the record through 2026.

What are you listening to now?

Frank Black’s first 3 solo records on shuffle.

How do you deal with anxiety?

I carry it in my jaw. Kidding/not kidding. To combat anxiety, I listen to spa music, swim, and work myself to exhaustion. Only then can I rest.

Did you have a favorite music teacher?

All my music teachers had their place and were all great in their own way. However, my drum teacher, Duncan Scott was not only a huge musical influence on me but had the best advice about how to go about having a career in music. I am forever grateful.

What is your songwriting process like?

Songwriting is a lot like chipping away at a sculpture to me. I can see the song inside of the marble but I have to get rid of all excess before I know if what I’m making is any good. Every song is different though. Sometimes the ideas come all at once. Sometimes it takes years for an idea to realize itself. In my opinion, having competent writing partners and collaboration always gets better results. It’s nice to create things together so that collections of songs have different feels and tone.

What has been your favorite venue to perform at? 

My favorite venue to perform at is Punk Rock Holiday in Slovenia. We are always treated well and the natural beauty of the surroundings is stunning. If you ever have a chance to go, DO IT! It is a punk rock mecca.

Do you think that you would win a karaoke contest?

No. However, I am part Filipino, so I may do ok. Meh.

What are your goals for your music career?

To keep busy, to share ideas, and to give back to the music industry as much as possible. I’m very fortunate that I don’t have a “job” outside of the music industry. Therefore, I believe it is my duty to try to ensure the success of musicians and the people who make live music possible.

What do you want people to know about your music?

I want people to know that if you, the listener, are able to take away something positive from what the band has put out into the world that makes me happy and I’ve done my job.
