The Fake Friends are in the middle of rolling out their debut LP Let’s Not Overthink This via Stomp Records—a record built on instinct, noise, and the kind of honesty that doesn’t sit still for long. We caught up with lyricist and vocalist Matthew Savage to talk about the album, anxiety, songwriting, and why sometimes the best creative decisions happen when the power goes out.

Tell us about your latest project

We are in the middle of releasing our first LP called “Lets Not Overthink This” on Stomp Records. As the title suggests, it’s a reminder for us to not get lost in the details and just rely on instinct and do what feels natural. It is a fun but introspective soundtrack to disassociate and dance to. 

What are you listening to now?

Literally listening to Bodies by Animal Boy right now. In general I have been listening to an obnoxious amount of bfmtrl and Fontaines DC.

How do you deal with anxiety?

Not well. Usually a bottle of white gatorade.

Did you have a favorite music teacher?

My cousin taught me how to play a power chord when I was 15. Big yah to Noel Reid. 

What is your songwriting process like?

Wrote a song yesterday because the power went out and I couldn’t watch 17 hours of the x files. Maybe it should go out more. Usually it is Felix giving us a skeleton and the rest of the band adds the spice and the joie de vivre that it calls for. It has been working out real well. 

What has been your favorite venue to perform at? 

When we played History in Toronto I felt like I was in The Rolling Stones which is stronger than any substance known to man. On the regular it is Sala Rosa or Turbo Haus. 

Do you think that you would win a karaoke contest?

I am a very limited vocalist but if it’s The Killers or Taking Back Sunday there is not a person on earth that is going to beat me. 

What are your goals for your music career?

To have the lead song in EA Sports NHL 27 and be Canada famous. 

What do you want people to know about your music?

Life is short and we actually have very little control of what happens outside of our day to day decisions. Put on a rock record and dance in your living and room and tell the person you’re with you love them.
