SEPT. 22 UPDATE: The Abbotsford-Mission byelection has been cancelled, following Premier David Eby’s announcement on Sept. 22 that a snap provincial election would take place on Oct. 24, two years earlier than schedule.

Any advance votes that had already been cast will not be counted and those voters will need to vote again in October.

Controversy continues to follow the B.C. Conservatives and its leader, Kerry-Lynne Findlay.

Seven MLAs left the B.C. Tories in August, with two more following in early September, many citing concerns over Findlay’s leadership as their reason for leaving caucus.

Of those who have left, seven have now joined together in a new, yet-to-be-named, centre right political party.

Since the 2024 election, 16 of the 44 MLAs elected under the B.C. Conservative banner have left, been expelled or resigned.

The shuffling comes as Findlay herself is still without a seat in the legislature, something that will be determined this month as voters in Abbotsford-Mission vote in a byelection.

John Rustad was ousted as leader of the B.C. Conservatives late last year, following reports of infighting, the resignation of several MLAs and a controversial leadership review spurred by what many saw as his inability to keep the party unified.

Findlay was selected as the party’s new leader in May 2026, her first foray into provincial politics following past experience in the federal Parliament.

But because she didn’t hold an elected seat, Abbotsford-Mission MLA Reanne Gasper stepped down to allow Findlay to run in that riding. Gasper won the riding in 2024 with 55.4 per cent of the vote, over NDP incumbent Pam Alexis.

Gasper’s departure was also surrounded by controversy, after the release of an audio clip where Findlay is heard telling MLAs she will give them a senior party adviser role if they step down to allow her to run. Gasper is now Findlay’s deputy chief of staff.

There are five candidates running in the byelection for Abbotsford-Mission. They are, in alphabetical order:

• Kerry-Lynne Findlay, Conservative party

• Stephen Fowler, B.C. Green party

• Jeff Monds, libertarian (No website available.)

VOTE BY MAIL: Sept. 20 by 8 p.m. is the last day to request a vote-by-mail package. You can request one by visiting elections.bc.ca/votebymail or by calling 1-800-661-8683.
