As a Fashion Editor who specialises in royal style, I can safely say that all of the late Princess Diana's outfits were nothing short of spectacular. Her plethora of iconic ensembles continues to inspire the fashion world, over two decades after her death. The former wife of King Charles single-handedly launched a myriad of trends, cementing her place as the very first fashion influencer, years before the internet was invented.

Although it's quite the task choosing her most definitive look, I think we can all unanimously agree that Princess Diana's 'revenge' dress was her most memorable. 

The mother of Prince William and Prince Harry stepped out in the iconic design on 29 June 1994. The glamorous, off-the-shoulder gown, which was designed by Christina Stambolian, went down in history as one of the most unforgettable little black dresses of all time. 

With its figure-hugging shape, corseted waist, and billowing bustle, it caused quite a stir as she arrived at London's Serpentine Gallery. It was dubbed the 'revenge dress', as she wore it on the same evening that her former husband, then Prince Charles, publicly revealed that he had been unfaithful to her during their marriage.

The dress is set to go to auction later this year for the first time since 1997, where it is expected to sell for up to £220,000, with part of the proceeds to be donated to NHS Lothian Charity on behalf of the Royal Edinburgh Hospital. The live auction will take place at Sotheby's in New York on 9 December 2026.

But first, royal fans from around the world will be able to view the historic look as it embarks on Sotheby's global exhibition tour with stops in Hong Kong, Geneva, New York, and the UK.

The 'revenge' dress will be on display at the auction house in London until 24 September. As of Monday, that's 72 hours to catch a glimpse of the style before it heads off to its next destination.
