An Alabama high school football coach is out of a job after being charged with public intoxication at a nearby school's football event in a failed plot to scout his opposition.

Jerry Fulks, who was about to begin his first season as a defensive coordinator and associate head coach at Guntersville High School, was arrested last Friday and subsequently resigned his position.

Fulks, 45, was at a football jamboree put on by Arab High School along with other coaches from his team. The leaders had hoped to analyze the opponent they'd open their season with, according to the Hartselle Enquirer. 

During the event, Fulks tried accessing the sideline by falsely telling police he was a writer for the Birmingham News.

'While speaking with Mr. Fulks, officers suspected he was intoxicated and escorted him out of the stadium,' the Arab police department told the outlet. 

'Following a brief investigation, officers determined that Mr. Fulks was intoxicated.'

After being escorted outside the stadium, Fulks was given a field sobriety test.

It was then that he reportedly revealed his true identity to police and shared his fear that the story would make the news.

Fulks, who was also a gym teacher at the school, was processed and booked into a Marshall County jail at 11:59pm, per online court records. He was released on bond the following morning.

'Guntersville City Schools is aware of an issue involving a school employee,' Guntersville superintendent Brad Cooper said in a statement released after the incident, according to the Hartselle Enquirer. 

'Because this is a personnel matter, we will not comment on specific details or any actions that may be pending. As always, we take all personnel matters seriously and will handle this situation appropriately and in accordance with district policies and applicable law.'

During a special meeting of the Guntersville City Board on Monday, it was revealed that Fulks had resigned.

'The Guntersville City Board of Education accepted Mr. Fulks' resignation during a special-called meeting this morning,' the school district said in a statement. 

'Effective today, Mr. Fulks is no longer employed by Guntersville City Schools. Because this is a personnel matter, the district will not comment further regarding the circumstances surrounding his resignation.'
