A ceremonial session dedicated to marking the 100^th anniversary of the birth of Academician Stevan O. Karamata will be organised on Monday, 28 September, at the SASA Grand Hall, at noon.

Academician Stevan O. Karamata (1926-2015) was the most distinguished petrologist of the second half of the 20th century and the first decade of the 21st century. The results of his research on the ophiolites of the Balkans are of global significance. His scientific work on the age and genesis of plutonic and volcanic complexes in Serbia, the relationship between magmatism and metallogeny, geochemical prospecting and ore-related alterations, and the Mesozoic and pre-Mesozoic geodynamics of the region made a significant contribution to the development of geological science.

He was elected a corresponding member of the Serbian Academy of Sciences in 1970 and a full member in 1985. He was also a member of the Yugoslav Academy of Sciences and Arts (1986), the Austrian Academy of Sciences (1982), the Slovenian Academy of Sciences and Arts (1991), the Russian Academy of Natural Sciences (1995) and the Academy of Sciences and Arts of the Republic of Srpska (2004).

He received numerous awards for his scientific work, some of which are the Order of Labour with a Golden Wreath (1981) and the Order of Njegoš, Second Class (1997).

The following speakers will address the ceremonial session marking the centenary of the birth of Academician Stevan O. Karamata: Professor Kristina Šarić, Academician Vladica Cvetković, Corresponding Member of the Serbian Academy of Sciences Dejan Prelević, and Ms Branka Bešlić.
