When my vehicle was stolen, it took the Metropolitan Police Department hours to respond, even though a tracking device showed its exact location. Eventually, I recovered the vehicle myself.

When an officer finally arrived, she was irritated that I asked for a police report and whether fingerprints could be taken. My stolen vehicle was plainly not a priority.

The experience reminded me of “The Big Lebowski.” When the Dude asks whether police have any leads on his stolen 1973 Ford Gran Torino, the officer laughs: “I’ll just check with the boys down at the crime lab. They’ve got four more detectives working on the case. They got us working in shifts!”

But new information has come to light. Apparently, the crime lab does become involved when someone draws a cartoon mustache and writes “C’mon, Man!” on a Joe Lombardo campaign billboard (Friday Review-Journal). Metro insists that Gov. Lombardo’s campaign did not request the investigation. One might say the officers were simply following their own discretion. Well, that’s just, like, their opinion, man.

The lesson abides: When most of us need Metro’s help, we are definitely not Joe Lombardo.
