There is something both tomboyish and sexy about these jeans. I was surprised by how much I loved them! The fabric is that classic 2007 skinny jean fabric, super soft and stretchy, and they looked so tiny on the hanger that I sized up without trying them on. I ended up trying the 28 petite too, and it’s the way to go: I love them with both flats and boots. If you’re petite-height, size down to the petite cut. I kinda love how kicky this shape is – “Modern Bootcut” indeed.

These Ref jeans are made from a 100% cotton that feels really good on. I wouldn’t describe these jeans as thin, nor rigid, instead they feel like a high-quality drapey denim. The cut of the Cary jean is really unique – it’s VERY high-rise, and the waist cinches in, but there’s a gentle roundness to the hips that feels almost old Hollywood. This silhouette is oddly good for multiple body types. I tend to carry weight in my middle, but these Cary jeans feel great – they’re not too squeezy on my softer stomach. Conversely, my sister has a tiny waist and carries weight in her hips…and she also loves Ref’s Cary jeans.

The denim feels high-quality and rigid – super soft with just a tiny bit of give, though we wouldn’t call them stretchy. Classic blue wash (it’s perfect), patch pockets, and cute contrast stitching. Heads up: Shana found they ran small, so she sized up, but Linzi sized down for a better fit at the waist. Honestly better than the Levi’s Ribcage for crop tops.

The denim itself is slightly nubby rather than smooth, but it’s super soft and really stretchy – these genuinely hold you in, in the best way. Just a heads up: the fabric runs on the thinner side. Shana went with a 29 in these.

You’ve gotta peek at the product pictures of these jeans to see the stripes on the cuff. What a fun little detail! They run pretty long, but the stripes are on the entire interior, so if you have to hem, they’ll stay when you cuff ‘em. They fit a bit loose in the waist and they’ve got a little stretch. I’d actually size down to a 6 for a tighter waist.

We love this muted ivory wash as a fresh, unexpected take on fall denim. These H&M Baggy High Waist Jeans are 100% cotton, so they don’t have stretch, but it turns out that they are incredibly soft, and fairly lightweight. S sized up so the waistband was more comfortable (see: no stretch), and the drape is great. These are a truly high-rise pair of jeans, but are loose through the waist and hip, then baggy from the thigh down. The website says that these jeans have 30.5 inch inseam, but the pair we tried are actually a little longer than that.

So these are basically skinny jeans. With a slightly flared hem. And, actually, they’re cropped skinny jeans with a flare. Between the super soft, stretchy, 2007 fabric, and the light color, these jeans are pretty revealing – I’m pretty sure you can see my quad muscle. That said…maybe I’m sleep deprived, but there’s something kind of nostalgic about these jeans: I didn’t hate them.

These Madewell Perfect Vintage jeans look like what your mama wore in the ’60s. They’ve got that “Perfect Vintage” look just like the name promises: full length, high waisted, with a soft, broken-in feel straight out of the box. The “Magic Pockets” in front give that held-in feel without any of the tightness, and with 91% cotton, 6% recycled polyester, 3% elastane, there’s enough stretch to keep them comfortable all day. Great, easy jeans – and that wash color is such a pretty shade, especially styled with heels.

I had been giving the rag&bone Logan Mid Rise Wide Leg Quilted Jeans side-eye in the preview (what’s up with this pattern??) so I really wanted to actually try them ON. In reality, they’re really freaking cool. They have a slight plaid-trouser-ish vibe, but more badass. Anyway, I loved them. 

These jeans do run a little large, I think. They only had a size 26 left (so that’s what I’m wearing), but I didn’t get to try my usual size 27. Reviewers consistently say to size down one size, tho.

The denim itself feels surprisingly high quality – thick, yet soft. S prefers her denim pretty slouchy (she often sizes up one size), which was also true here: she’s wearing a size 29 (her usual size is a 28).

They’re the perfect dark wash for fall, stretchy and easy to wear all day – genuinely some of the most comfortable jeans we tried this whole sale. They hold you in, but never in an uncomfortable way. I sized up to a 29 from my usual 28 since Madewell denim typically doesn’t have any stretch. But, I will say that these actually surprised me! They’re so light and airy rather than stiff. I’m also obsessed with the tie detail at the waist; it’s such a cute, feminine touch. Love, love, love these.

A tried and true classic is back in this year’s Nordstrom Anniversary Sale (they’re really soft). Their Ribcage jeans have been a long-time favorite (you can check out our Levi’s deep dive here), and this darker-wash pair reimagines the classic Ribcage fit with a full-length wide leg, along with the super-high waist and nonstretch denim. Shana tried the 28 (tts) and it was perfect – sizing up to a 29 ended up too baggy. Linzi initially got the 28 (shown above), but then sized down to a 27 because they relaxed with wear. They’re thin & lightweight, almost like pajama jeans (maybe part of Levi’s lightweight collection?), and honestly feel a lot like the rag & bone Featherweight jeans. Just know they run super long.

Trousers meet jeans in this seriously polished style by Kut from the Kloth. We’re big fans of the sleek middle seam. It makes them look more elevated and put-together.

These featherweight jeans have the coolest, vintage-inspired wash – they look juuust like old school, well-worn, rigid denim, but are, in fact, super light and flowy. In my usual size, they were pleasantly loose, but I found the rise to be high, not mid-rise. I ended up sizing up one for extra slouch. 

These are a true straight-leg jean, which I really appreciated – those can be hard to find!

We’ve been calling Joe’s Margot High Waist Straight Leg Jeans the “French Editor” jeans around the office, and, after trying them on, they are exactly that: a true straight leg. The denim is a little stretchy (76% cotton, 23% lyocell, 1% elastane) and soft – they are not stiff at all – and the rise is nice and high. The jeans are pretty long, though (a little longer than the 32″ inseam listed).

To give you a better idea of what these jeans would look like properly hemmed, I messed around with the cuff a bit – squint to get the idea. The leg is a straight as straight can be – a refreshing change from most straight leg jeans that are just skinnies in disguise. 🙂

It’s one of the more understated finds in this year’s Nordstrom Anniversary Sale. Made from organic cotton and TENCEL™ Lyocell, they’ve got a pleated high-rise waist for a little extra structure up top, plus a welt pocket detail in back that keeps things looking polished rather than basic.

Free People’s whimsy style shows up in full force in these Runyon High Waist jeans. Unfortunately, there’s way too much going on for us with these jeans. They run HUGE – like, ridiculously huge – and while the fabric itself is lightweight and soft, the fit made them nearly impossible to actually wear. A bummer, because we really wanted to love these.
