This biannual publication focuses on news and scientific content from throughout NSF NOIRLab, which is funded by the U.S. National Science Foundation (NSF). Dive into stories that showcase the science, technology, and developments from the five NSF NOIRLab Programs: the Community Science and Data Center (CSDC), NSF Cerro Tololo Inter-American Observatory (CTIO), the International Gemini Observatory, NSF Kitt Peak National Observatory (KPNO), and NSF–DOE Vera C. Rubin Observatory — jointly funded by the NSF and the U.S. Department of Energy's Office of Science and operated jointly by NOIRLab and DOE’s SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory.
This issue opens with a remembrance of our colleague Richard R. “Dick” Joyce, showcasing his contributions to astronomy and the meaningful impact he had on the people of NOIRLab and Kitt Peak. Dick played a central role at Dark Energy Spectroscopic Instrument (DESI), serving as the Mayall Telescope Scientist, and he is dearly missed by the organization.
This issue additionally features a collection of science and engineering highlights spanning the breadth of NOIRLab facilities and Programs, including exciting advancements by Rubin Observatory in its early operations. These advancements are driven by Rubin’s incredible capability to track changes in the night sky, resulting in the discovery of nearly 13,000 asteroids and necessitating the “Once in a Rubin Gem” directors’ discretionary initiative. It also showcases the new automated data-processing features in the Gemini Observatory Archive and the success of the 2026 Research Experiences for Undergraduates (REU) /Práctica en Investigación en Astronomía (Research Practices in Astronomy; PIA) program in Chile.

NSF NOIRLab, the U.S. National Science Foundation center for ground-based optical-infrared astronomy, operates the International Gemini Observatory (a facility of NSF, NRC–Canada, ANID–Chile, MCTIC–Brazil, MINCyT–Argentina, and KASI–Republic of Korea), NSF Kitt Peak National Observatory (KPNO), NSF Cerro Tololo Inter-American Observatory (CTIO), the Community Science and Data Center (CSDC), and NSF–DOE Vera C. Rubin Observatory (in cooperation with DOE’s SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory). It is managed by the Association of Universities for Research in Astronomy (AURA) under a cooperative agreement with NSF and is headquartered in Tucson, Arizona.
The scientific community is honored to have the opportunity to conduct astronomical research on I’oligam Du’ag (Kitt Peak) in Arizona, on Maunakea in Hawai‘i, and on Cerro Tololo and Cerro Pachón in Chile. We recognize and acknowledge the very significant cultural role and reverence of I’oligam Du’ag to the Tohono O’odham Nation, and Maunakea to the Kanaka Maoli (Native Hawaiians) community.
