СпутникиРНSpaceXРоскосмосNASAKitt Peak Visitor Center at U.S. National Science Foundation Kitt Peak National Observatory (KPNO), a Program of NSF NOIRLab, welcomed three fine artists celebrating Paint Arizona Day in early April. From the summit of I’oligam Du’ag (Manzanita Shrub Mountain) they painted the landscape below — the expansive Sonoran Desert; the westward-stretching Basin and Range landscape; the sacred mountains of the Tohono O’odham; and the observatory’s tallest structure, the NSF Nicholas U. Mayall 4-meter Telescope.
The blue sky was animated by ever-changing clouds, and the day was warm with abundant sunshine. Artists painted using easels stationed between the SARA Kitt Peak Telescope and the Visitor Center Roll Off Roof Observatory. Cornelia Jensen painted with pastels, Nora Chorover painted with oils, and Lee Ann Woolery painted with acrylics.
Paint Arizona Day is a unique celebration of art, nature, and community held annually in Arizona. The event encourages artists of all levels to embrace the beauty of the state by painting outdoors, en plein air. Artist Cornelia Jensen served as the Paint Arizona Day Ambassador to Kitt Peak National Observatory, hosted by James Lockridge of the Kitt Peak Visitor Center.
Paintings from the event will be exhibited at the Four Corners Gallery at the Tucson Desert Art Museum from 22 April–23 May, with a free public reception on Saturday, 25 April, 2–4 p.m.

NSF NOIRLab, the U.S. National Science Foundation center for ground-based optical-infrared astronomy, operates the International Gemini Observatory (a facility of NSF, NRC–Canada, ANID–Chile, MCTIC–Brazil, MINCyT–Argentina, and KASI–Republic of Korea), NSF Kitt Peak National Observatory (KPNO), NSF Cerro Tololo Inter-American Observatory (CTIO), the Community Science and Data Center (CSDC), and NSF–DOE Vera C. Rubin Observatory (in cooperation with DOE’s SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory). It is managed by the Association of Universities for Research in Astronomy (AURA) under a cooperative agreement with NSF and is headquartered in Tucson, Arizona.
The scientific community is honored to have the opportunity to conduct astronomical research on I’oligam Du’ag (Kitt Peak) in Arizona, on Maunakea in Hawai‘i, and on Cerro Tololo and Cerro Pachón in Chile. We recognize and acknowledge the very significant cultural role and reverence of I’oligam Du’ag to the Tohono O’odham Nation, and Maunakea to the Kanaka Maoli (Native Hawaiians) community.
