With contributions from over 40 staff members from NOIRLab’s sites in Arizona, Hawai‘i, and Chile, The Scope highlights how NOIRLab strives to achieve its mission of Discovering Our Universe Together.

The name The Scope is not only a clever nod to the astronomer’s tool of choice, but it also refers to the broad extent or breadth of something. As such, The Scope seeks to reveal the wide variety of work done within our organization through evocative stories that readers can emotionally connect with.
Within these pages, the endeavor of science is explored from distinct, and perhaps unexpected, perspectives. The Telescope Scientist of the NSF Nicholas U. Mayall 4-meter Telescope and the Electronic Tech Supervisor at NSF Kitt Peak National Observatory reminisce on the beginnings of the Dark Energy Spectroscopic Instrument (DESI). A night is spent with observers at the International Gemini Observatory as they witness the detection of the third interstellar object ever recorded. Instrumentation specialists and astronomers also share what they are most excited about in the future of multi-messenger astronomy and large-scale surveys.
Additionally, The Scope aims to broaden the known possibilities for early-career professionals looking to work in astronomy. We share stories from the administrators who keep NOIRLab’s sites organized, the tour guides who answer to the call of the public and their curiosity about the cosmos, and the photographers who capture the beauty of the night sky to make astronomy accessible to all.
The aim is to expand The Scope by incorporating more perspectives from NOIRLab staff. Just as large-scale astronomical surveys build a richer and more comprehensive picture of the unbounded cosmos with every scan of the sky, future editions of The Scope will build on one another to broaden and deepen the public’s view of NOIRLab.

NSF NOIRLab, the U.S. National Science Foundation center for ground-based optical-infrared astronomy, operates the International Gemini Observatory (a facility of NSF, NRC–Canada, ANID–Chile, MCTIC–Brazil, MINCyT–Argentina, and KASI–Republic of Korea), NSF Kitt Peak National Observatory (KPNO), NSF Cerro Tololo Inter-American Observatory (CTIO), the Community Science and Data Center (CSDC), and NSF–DOE Vera C. Rubin Observatory (in cooperation with DOE’s SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory). It is managed by the Association of Universities for Research in Astronomy (AURA) under a cooperative agreement with NSF and is headquartered in Tucson, Arizona.
The scientific community is honored to have the opportunity to conduct astronomical research on I’oligam Du’ag (Kitt Peak) in Arizona, on Maunakea in Hawai‘i, and on Cerro Tololo and Cerro Pachón in Chile. We recognize and acknowledge the very significant cultural role and reverence of I’oligam Du’ag to the Tohono O’odham Nation, and Maunakea to the Kanaka Maoli (Native Hawaiians) community.
